About Bras for Body & Soul® Bras for Body & Soul®, a program of the HERS Breast Cancer Foundation, provides medically necessary items such as bra’s, prosthesis, lymphedema sleeves, wigs and more, to women who have had breast surgery. We also carry bra’s appropriate for all women and girls, including nursing bra’s. Cheryl Maloney and Tricia McMahon created Bras for Body & Soul® in 1995 as a way to walk with women through a difficult life challenge: breast cancer. Without delay, they realized that the majority of women, including but not limited to women facing breast cancer, need and desire bras that truly offer support, comfort, i.e. health and well-being. As of 2003, the HERS Breast Cancer Foundation (which was founded in 1998) is carrying on the service and care for women in this way because Bras for Body & Soul® is first and foremost a service for women and women’s health. As a program of HERS, Bras for Body & Soul® enunciates and further fulfills the Mission of the Foundation: The HERS Breast Cancer Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, provides programs and services supporting the needs of women and families affected by breast cancer in the San Francisco Bay Area. We call this work "body & soul" because our intent is for each woman to experience the comfort she desires as well as the integrity she deserves. Bras, breasts, body, sexuality....these are realities and concepts that we don't easily talk about in our culture. Even women who might ordinarily feel comfortable shopping for a bra, may find difficulty in doing so after breast surgery. At Bra’s for Body & Soul we strive to provide a safe, comfortable and understanding environment for women to find the products that they need. We feel that both the service and the products of Bras for Body & Soul are vital to women and we hope to bring femininity, integrity and dignity to the bodies of women, especially their breasts. Therefore, Bras for Body & Soul is not a typical medical supply house. Rather, it is a unique service meeting the needs of this very important facet of each woman's body and health. And, now, it is a meaningful response to the rapidly growing incidence of breast cancer and the diverse needs of women survivors. The success of our work is evident when a client says: "I can breathe better," or "I am standing up straighter, or "I feel lighter," after a fitting. In some cases a woman even reconsiders breast reduction surgery. Clients have discovered that a proper fit greatly enhances how they feel physically as well as how they feel about themselves, and naturally enhances how they look.
What a great pleasure it is for us to have met Laurel Burch -- a woman of deep beauty, enlivening spirit and grace! Our logo, a Laurel Burch original, embodies the depth and breadth of our work with women. Below, Tricia meets Laurel for the first time, after many months of e-mails and telephone conversations. In Loving Memory of our Dear Friend Laurel Burch: Our hearts, and the heart of woman/mankind, is broken this day as we say goodbye to a very dear and precious woman who has inspired, enlivened, LOVED all the world's creatures through her art. Laurel passed away on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007. Laurel Burch had a magical, mystical way of touching everyone's heart. Read more...
